Hot! Let’s Lose Two

Good to see the Screwers drop a split squad doubleheader the other day, the losses lowered their sparkling spring training record to a sparkling 3-6 mark,  placing them 13th out of 16 teams in the prickly Cactus League in Arizona.  The double dose of misery  reminded me of the classic “Twi-Night Double Headers” my dad used to drag me to as a kid, remember those?

County Stadium was the scene of the home team slaughterhouse back then for the woeful Screw-Ha’s of the 70’s.  The games usually started at five o’clock or so and painfully lingered long into the Friday or Saturday nights.  Beer was reasonably cheap back then, and the 2 for 1 game deal was enough to justify a good way to kill a late afternoon and evening, at least by my father’s standards.  If you think the current squad masquerading as a major league team is pretty bad, the collection of players in the early years in Milwaukee make these Blewers look like the Yankees.

Anyway, even promotions like Bat Night and Helmet Night couldn’t help the Blew Crew pull out even one victory while playing two, they always ended in a double whammy of frustration, at least when I was there. I can still hear the sounds of empty beer cups being stomped in the upper sections as a few over-served souls remained for the final disgusting out. Later, as we weaved are way down along I-90/94 on our way back home, I always wondered when and how the Screwers could or would, ever win just one game when I was there.

But as we learned in the last blog, “Nope Springs Eternal”, and I say bring back the Twi-Night Double Headers, because this current team, it appears,  is custom made for  “Let’s Lose Two!”

And For What
