Hot! Someday, Someway

The calm outside the storm

Another crazy, opening week of March Madness is about to conclude, and once again I’m left to observe from the familiar confines of superstitious local taverns and in front of the 55″ Vizio in the rec room. I’d rather be in Vegas.

We’ve talked about, we’ve dreamed about it, yet here I sit, away from the chaos of the sports books, sweating out meaningless bet-a-case-of beer pools and the family reunion on-line contest. Some 1751 miles away, sports fanatics of all ages are wagering their hearts out a midst the stale cigar smoke and beer infused atmosphere of their favorite Vegas sports book, clinging to 3 team parlay tickets that hang on the balance of a 17 1/2 point spread with thirty seconds to play.

I’ve been in that environment for conference tournament weekend, even for the Final Four and the NFC and AFC Championship Sundays in Vegas, but nothing compares to the frenzied chaos of the first week of the NCAA tournament. That’s what I’ve been told anyway, and that’s what I believe. That’s why it’s on my bucket list.

Serenity might reign outside, but it's chaos inside in the sports books.

If you had the underdogs so far this week with the points, you’d be 25-11, and there would be extra cash for limo rides to various destinations that give new meaning to the term celebration. There would be the high priced dinner at N9NE or Craftsteak, an extra bankroll for the dice table and perhaps a draw on that $20 cigar at Rhumbar, as you sip on your Latin Manhattan.

Not faring as well as you thought at the outset? Then double down on Saturday and Sunday and really get your your adrenalin pumping. If you come up empty and and extinguish your bank reserve for the weekend, why worry, you probably just had one of the greatest weeks of your life anyway.

Yes, someday, instead of patronizing the nearby tavern and putting my hard earned money back into the local economy, I’ll take an undisclosed bankroll to the desert, head to the sports book at 5:30 am for four straight days, and love every minute of it. Someday, someway. Who wants to come along?

And For What
